What are the Benefits of Wheat Grass?

Wheat grass has long been used as herbal medicine due to its therapeutic and nutritional properties. The benefits of wheat grass are derived from its powerful nutritional content. While wheat grass offers many of the same nutrients as other green leafy vegetables, the nutrients in wheat grass are more concentrated, meaning that small servings of wheat grass pack a whole lot of nutrition.

Wheat grass is 70% chlorophyll, which is considered as "the richest nutritional liquid known to man” due to the wide array of benefits.

Wheat grass contains the following nutrients:

How is Antler Farms® Organic Wheat Grass Grown and Harvested?

Antler Farms® Organic Wheat Grass is grown outdoors, without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or artificial fertilizers.

We have a proven system for producing the highest quality organic wheat grass through careful management of weeds and pests through a variety of processes. These processes include crop rotation, management of soil nutrients, non-chemical weeding and approved pest control practices. Every batch of wheat grass is tested for ensure there is no E. coli, salmonella, yeast, mold and other harmful bacteria. Additional, we do random tests for heavy metals.

Our wheat grass is grown in the rich, fertile soil of New Zealand’s Canterbury Plains. Our soil is routinely tested each year before use to ensure it meets certified organic standards. On our sustainably managed farms, our wheat grass is grown over hundreds of days, in natural sunlight, through hot and cold periods. This slow growth process enables our wheat grass to develop deep roots that absorb minerals and nutrients from the soil. As a result, our wheat grass develops dark green leaves which contain an abundance of chlorophyll, enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

Our wheat grass is harvested precisely when its nutrients are at their peak concentration to provide the highest quality product with maximum nutritional content.

The harvesting schedule of wheat grass is critical. In nature, the purpose of the wheat plant is to produce grain once it has accumulated enough solar energy and nutrients to do so. Therefore, the nutrients in wheat grass reach their peak concentrations just before the jointing stage of the plant. This moment is determined through visual inspection, rather than by age or height of the plant. Our wheat grass is harvested at exactly this time period to ensure that our products are at their maximum nutritional content.

Skill is required to harvest at this optimal time, which can be as short as four days. After this time window, the nutrient levels begin to decline as the plant enters the jointing phase.

Once harvested, our wheat grass is dehydrated at a low temperature that preserves nutrients and enzymes. The moisture level is taken to below 4%, where bacteria cannot survive. As soon as the wheat grass comes out of the dehydrator, it is milled into a powder, and packed for shipping.

WHY IS OUTDOOR WHEAT GRASS SUPERIOR TO TRAY GROWN WHEAT GRASS?

Tray grown wheat grass is nutritionally inferior to outdoor wheat grass. Many consumers of the tray grown wheat grass juice do not realize that it is made from wheat grass that has not reached its full nutritional potential. Tray grown wheat grass is grown under artificial conditions - usually in a warm greenhouse or indoors under fluorescent lightning. The grass is harvested and juiced only 7-10 days after sprouting, compared to up to 200 days for outdoor wheat grass. Therefore tray grown wheat grass does not have time to develop a significant root system. Instead the accelerated growth causes the plant to put most of its energy into growing leaves.

Tray grown wheat grass has a relatively high level of simple sugars compared to outdoor wheat grass. Because tray grown wheat grass develops quickly, it does not have the time to convert these sugars into complex carbohydrates, vitamins, enzymes and proteins. Furthermore, tray grown wheat grass is often grown with little to no soil. Very few nutrients are absorbed through the roots.

Finally, tray grown wheat grass juice is 95% water and only 5% nutrition, whereas Antler Farms® Organic Wheat Grass powder is 100% nutrition. The chlorophyll content from our organic wheat grass powder is 4 times higher per serving than tray grown wheat grass juice. Our wheat grass has 36 mg of chlorophyll per serving (4 g) while tray-grown wheat grass juice that has just 8 mg per serving. The protein in our organic wheat grass is twice that of tray grown wheat grass juice. Our wheat grass has 1.2 g of protein per serving (4 g) while tray grown wheat grass has just 550 mg per serving.
