Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a flowering plant of the ginger family. It is native to warm, tropical areas of Southeast Asia. The root of turmeric, known as rhizome, is fleshy and tuberous. It has a bright, golden orange color. The flavor of turmeric is described as peppery and ginger-like.

The use of turmeric as a spice and as an herb in traditional medicine dates back to over 4,000 years. Archaeologists have discovered traces of turmeric in pots that date back to 2500 BC. And it emerged as an important medicine in Ayurvedic healing around 500 B.C.

What are the Benefits of Turmeric Curcumin?

Turmeric is one of nature's most powerful healers.

The main active ingredients in turmeric are natural polyphenols known as curcuminoids. The curcuminoid content of turmeric is comprised of approximately 77% curcumin, 17% demethoxycurcumin, and 3% bisdemethoxycurcumin. Of these, curcumin is the most abundant, most active, and most beneficial to health. It is also the curcuminoid for which most studies have been done.

Curcumin has many scientifically proven health benefits.

Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall health.

  • REDUCES INFLAMMATION: Most of turmeric’s benefits can be attributed to its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Inflammation has been identified in the development of many chronic diseases and conditions. Curcumin has been shown to suppress inflammation by inhibiting the activity of enzymes and cytokines that promote inflammation. It also suppresses the production of inflammatory cells in the body.

There are many studies that confirm turmeric's effectiveness. A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that curcumin supplementation significantly reduced inflammation markers in individuals with metabolic syndrome. In another study, curcumin was found to be as effective as aspirin and ibuprofen in reducing inflammation. A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Interventions in Aging noted that curcumin supplementation improved symptoms of osteoarthritis in elderly patients. Another study found that curcumin supplementation reduced pain and inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • BOOSTS BRAIN FUNCTION: Turmeric can improve brain function and reduce the risk of neurological disorders. In a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, participants who took curcumin supplements for four weeks showed improved memory and attention.

Curcumin has also been found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases like dementia, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Low levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that promotes the growth and survival of brain cells, have been linked to depression and other neurological disorders. Curcumin has been found to increase levels of BDNF.
  • SUPPORTS HEART HEALTH: Turmeric can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Free radical damage, along with inflammation, is a key driver of cardiovascular disease. Curcumin can reduce inflammation and prevent the formation of blood clots, thus reducing the risk of heart attack. Also, curcumin has been found to improve endothelial function, which is the ability of blood vessels to dilate and contract properly.

In addition to antioxidant effects, turmeric has also been shown to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in people at risk of heart disease, and may improve blood pressure.
  • AIDS DIGESTIVE HEALTH: Turmeric may have benefits for digestive health. It has been traditionally used to treat various digestive disorders in Ayurvedic medicine. Curcumin has been found to improve gut health by reducing inflammation and improving gut microbiome. It can help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action.

In a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, curcumin was effective in managing symptoms of IBS.
  • IMPROVES SKIN HEALTH: Turmeric is beneficial for overall skin health. Besides its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it is antiseptic and antibacterial, which can help improve skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that curcumin supplementation improved skin elasticity and reduced fine lines and wrinkles in middle-aged women. Curcumin also reduces excess melanin production, the pigment responsible for dark spots, blemishes and hyperpigmentation.

How is Antler Farms® Turmeric Curcumin Harvested and Extracted?

Our turmeric curcumin product contains a blend of turmeric, standardized turmeric root extract, and black pepper extract.

At Antler Farms®, we carefully collect and process our raw materials to ensure the active ingredients are never compromised. Each ingredient has been thoughtfully selected to maximize turmeric’s therapeutic properties.

TURMERIC (4-6% CURCUMIN)

Turmeric is a tropical herb and requires humid climate conditions and substantial rainfall to thrive.

Our turmeric is grown in the rich, fertile soils of Southern India, without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or artificial fertilizers. India is the largest producer and exporter of turmeric in the world. Our turmeric is harvested precisely when its nutrients are at their peak concentration to provide the highest quality product with maximum nutritional content.

Once harvested, the rhizomes are cleaned and cured. The curing process involves boiling the fresh turmeric rhizomes in water, slowly drying them in the sun over many days, and then polishing them to remove the outer skin. Finally, the polished rhizomes are ground into a fine powder.

During the curing process, the rhizomes undergo several chemical changes that enhance their functional properties. The curcumin is broken down into smaller compounds called curcuminoids, which are more soluble and stable, making turmeric more available for use in food and supplements.

Turmeric contains vitamins C and E and various minerals including potassium, iron, manganese, and zinc.

TURMERIC ROOT EXTRACT (95% CURCUMIN)

One of the main drawbacks of consuming turmeric is that curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has low bioavailability due to its low solubility, rapid metabolism, and poor absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. To combat this characteristic, we use a highly concentrated turmeric extract (containing 95% curcumin) to boost the curcumin content and added black pepper extract to increase the absorption.

Our turmeric root extract is made by mixing turmeric powder with a solvent, such as ethanol, to dissolve the curcuminoids and other active compounds. The solvent is then evaporated, leaving behind a concentrated extract.

BLACK PEPPER EXTRACT

Black pepper extract contains an active compound called piperine, which is used in certain supplements to enhance the bioavailability. It has been found to inhibit the activity of enzymes that break down some nutrients. By inhibiting these enzymes, piperine can help increase the absorption of our turmeric curcumin and improve its effectiveness.

Piperine can increase the bioavailability of curcumin by up to 2,000%.
