Deer Antler Velvet for Dogs, Cats and Pets

Deer antler velvet's active ingredients are beneficial for the health and vitality of dogs, cats and other pets.

It is estimated that 20% of dogs over the age of one suffer from osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that leads to stiffness, pain, and decreased range of motion. In fact, arthritis is the most common health problem in dogs. Although it is more common in older dogs, it can appear in dogs of almost any age. Cats too develop arthritis at the same rate though it is believed that felines are more apt to hide the symptoms.

Though pets naturally and gradually become less active through aging, arthritis may unnecessarily accelerate their inactivity. Purebred and large dogs are very susceptible to hip and joint problems, reportedly affecting more than 80% of older dogs and large breeds.

Arthritis can affect any joint in the body, such as the hips, knees, shoulders, elbows and spine. In a healthy joint, a layer of smooth cartilage protects the bones, and the bones glide smoothly over each other during movement. When cartilage deteriorates, the bones rub each other directly, causing pain and inflammation of the entire joint, including the surrounding ligaments and muscles. Preventative measures are best employed early in a pet's life as symptoms do not appear until arthritis has advanced and damage to joints is severe.

Just like with humans, dogs, cats and other pets can reap benefits from deer antler velvet supplementation.

The components within deer antler velvet can help boost the health of your dog, cat, horse or other pet. Particularly, the proteins and growth factors are great for muscle tissue and cell repair, while the glycosaminoglycans are highly beneficial for joint health.

Proteins and Growth Factors
Amino acids - precursors for all protein production, aids tissue growth, muscle recovery and repair
Insulin-like growth factors (IGF-1, 2) - precursors for growth hormone production, promotes muscle growth, tissue growth and organ health
Collagen - a structural protein present in bone, tendons, ligaments, other connective tissue and articular cartilage

Glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s)
Glucosamine sulphate - builds, maintains and repairs joint structures including bone, cartilage, ligaments, joint fluids and tendons
Chondroitin sulphate - helps protect and rebuild degenerating cartilage, gives cartilage elasticity, an anti-inflammatory agent
Hyaluronic acid - a substance that binds cartilage cells together and lubricates joints

We recommend a dosage of one capsule (500 mg) for every 45 lbs. of bodyweight daily, using Antler Farms® Deer Antler Velvet Capsules (do not use deer antler velvet extract, which contains xylitol and can be toxic). The capsules should be opened and the deer antler velvet powder mixed in with your pet's food. Adjust the dose according to your pet's needs.

Studies show that deer antler velvet is effective in preventing and treating pets with mobility issues, joint pain and inflammation.

A study done by the University of Montreal in 2004, published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal, evaluated the effect of velvet antler on client-owned dogs with osteoarthrosis. The double-blind and placebo-controlled study included 13 dogs that received a placebo for 30 days and then velvet antler for 60 days, and 25 dogs that received velvet antler for 60 days. Gait analysis was measured with a force plate. Clinical signs were assessed by an orthopedic surgeon. Performances in daily life activities and vitality were assessed by the owners. And complete blood analyses were obtained at days 0, after 30 days of placebo and/or after 60 days of velvet antler.

On placebo, the 13 dogs did not show significant improvement; however, their gait, their performances in daily life activities, and their vitality were significantly improved on velvet antler, based on changes in values exceeding those observed when placebo was administered. The 25 dogs on velvet antler for 60 days showed similar improvements. No clinical changes were revealed on blood analyses. The conclusion was that the administration of velvet antler was effective in alleviating the condition in arthritic dogs.

Another study done by the Douglas County Animal Hospital in conjunction with the University of Minnesota in 2007 tested velvet antler on dogs diagnosed with traumatic and/or degenerative joint disease of one or multiple joints. Seventy limbs in 45 dogs were analyzed based on nine areas of mobility-related criteria; each limb was scored from one (no signs) to four (severe) at trial initiation, six weeks and 12 weeks. Mobility and systemic effects using hematological tests, veterinarian assessment and owner perceptions were measured.

The conclusion was that dogs treated with velvet antler improved their joint mobility. All trial animals exhibited significantly improved range of motion and orthopedic scores in the areas of walking, trotting, running, and climbing stairs. The vast majority of these dogs exhibited extreme signs of improvement at the 6 week and the 12 week examinations.
