Maca, scientifically known as Lepidium meyenii, is a root vegetable native to the Peruvian Andes. It has been cultivated and consumed in the region for thousands of years.

With a rich history deeply rooted in ancient traditions, maca root was highly revered by the indigenous people of the Andes, including the Inca civilization. They believed maca to be a sacred plant.

Maca root is a superfood with a rich nutrient profile, containing essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and unique fatty acids known as macaenes and macamides. Macaenes and macamides are known for their potential effects on sexual health and libido.

While maca root remained a vital part of Peruvian culture and traditional medicine, it gained international attention in the late 20th century. Its potential health benefits and adaptogenic properties sparked interest among researchers and health enthusiasts, leading to a resurgence in its popularity as a dietary supplement.

What are the Differences Between Yellow, Red and Black Maca?

Maca root comes in a variety of colors, but are grouped into three basic categories – yellow, red, and black.

Though maca skin and roots are different hues, inside they are all yellow. They all grow from the same seed crop and have the same nutritional profile. However, the phytonutrients in the different skin colors give each a unique set of characteristics and thus, effect the body in a different way.

The general breakdown of a maca harvest will yield approximately 60-70% yellow maca, 20-25% red maca, and only 10-15% black maca.

In traditional medicine, the abundant yellow maca was consumed daily for general health and well-being. The red and black maca were considered rare and used therapeutically. Red maca is believed to nourish feminine energy while black maca is believed to support masculine energy.

Yellow Maca (General Health)

Yellow maca is the most common and widely available type. It has a lighter color and a mild, nutty flavor.

Yellow maca is often considered most versatile maca, suitable for various health goals. It is believed to support energy levels, hormonal balance, and overall well-being. Scientific studies of yellow maca have shown that it can boost energy, increase fertility and sexual function in men and women, enhance metabolic function, and combat stress and fatigue.

Antler Farms® Raw Maca contains 100% yellow maca root powder.

Red Maca (Women's Health)

Red maca root is characterized by its reddish-brown color. It is known for its slightly sweeter and milder taste.

Red maca is often associated with potential benefits for women's health, including menstrual cycle regulation and menopause symptoms. Studies show that red maca is the most effective at improving female fertility and libido. Some studies also suggest that red maca may prevent post-menopausal bone loss.

Black Maca (Men's Health)

Black maca root has a dark color which sets it apart from the other varieties. It has a strong earthy, more bitter flavor compared to red and yellow maca.

Black maca is often associated with potential benefits related to male energy and stamina, hormonal balance, and sexual health. It has a reputation of being a natural aphrodisiac and is known to enhance sexual function. Scientific studies suggest that black maca may have positive effects on sexual desire, arousal, and fertility. It has been shown to increase sperm production and function and enhance male libido.

Clinical studies have also shown black maca is effective for improving memory function, learning and brain clarity, as well as improving athletic performance. Therefore, women also find black maca very beneficial for the above reasons.

How is Antler Farms® Black Maca Grown and Harvested?

Antler Farms® Black Maca is grown outdoors, without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or artificial fertilizers.

Our maca crop is grown in the high-altitude region of Peru, in the Junin Plateau. The natural climate here, with its high altitude, cool temperatures, and intense sunlight, creates an optimal environment for maca cultivation.

At the peak of nutrition, the maca root is carefully harvested and cleaned. Next, the maca are sundried for several weeks. The low oxygen environment and cooler temperatures provide the best drying conditions with the minimal oxidation and nutrient loss.

Once the maca roots are adequately dried, they are milled into a fine powder for encapsulation. By keeping our processing to a minimum, Antler Farms® Black Maca maintains its nutritional integrity and efficacy.

Antler Farms® Black Maca contains Peruvian black maca that is 100% pure, raw, vegan and gluten free with no GMOs.
