Green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) are a type of shellfish that are native to New Zealand. It gets its name from its distinctive shell that has bright green edges. These mollusks grow abundantly in New Zealand’s shallow coastal waters, where they adhere themselves to rocks and feed on plankton.

Green-lipped mussels are extremely nutrient dense - rich in beneficial compounds including omega-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids, minerals, glycoproteins, chondroitin, and glucosamine.

The indigenous Māori people have consumed green-lipped mussels as a staple food for thousands of years and an iconic seafood for all New Zealanders.

What are the Benefits of Green-Lipped Mussel Oil?

Green-lipped mussel oil is unique due to its range of over 30 bioactive lipids.

Similar to omega-3 supplements like fish oil, green-lipped mussel oil contains omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). But it also contains minor lipid components including free fatty acids, sphingolipids, polar lipids, and most importantly eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA).

Scientists believe that these lipid components work together in the body to provide its main benefits. Therefore, the most effective green-lipped mussel oil should contain its entire naturally occurring lipid panel in a concentrated form.

The fatty acids in green-lipped mussel oil are potent inhibitors of enzymes and proteins that produce inflammation and pain. Specifically, the oil inhibits 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme which helps form some of the inflammatory chemicals found in arthritis. By blocking 5-lipoxygenase, the inflammatory response is reduced. When compared to fish oil, studies show that green-lipped mussel oil is a more effective anti-inflammatory. It requires a small dose to achieve the same effects and green-lipped mussel oil works faster as well.

How are Antler Farms® Green Lipped Mussels Farmed?

Our green-lipped mussels are raised naturally in the South Pacific Ocean from wild, sustainably harvested mussel seed.

New Zealand green-lipped mussels are farmed using wild mussel seed known as spat. In certain areas of the country, massive amounts of spat wash ashore while attached to clumps of seaweed.

This seaweed is collected and bound to a nursery rope using a tubular cotton stocking. The spat transfer themselves to the rope as the seaweed and stocking biodegrade. Nursery lines are kept in areas with low fish density to limit predation. However, placing lines in clean, unpolluted, and calm water is the most essential consideration.

After three to six months, the now juvenile mussels are reseeded onto a cultivation rope to allow space for the mussels to continue growing. These ropes are configured as loops that are suspended on a surface rope called a longline. Longlines consist of parallel ropes that are attached to buoys at the surface and are anchored with concrete to the sea floor.

In 9-18 months, the mussels are ready for harvest. The precise time for harvest is determined through periodic sampling of the mussels. Mature mussels are removed from the cultivation ropes, declumped, washed, and removed from their shells. Highly efficient mechanical equipment is utilized so that the entire process takes only a few hours.

Our New Zealand green-lipped mussels are processed in state-of-the-art high-tech factories that operate under very strict quality control guidelines that are determined by New Zealand Government regulations and international food processing standards.

How is Antler Farms® Green Lipped Mussel Oil Processed?

Antler Farms® uses a patented extraction method to create its powerful green-lipped mussel oil that contains the full spectrum of bioactive lipids.

First, green-lipped mussel meat is freeze dried and ground into a powder. Then, using supercritical CO2 extraction technology, the mussel oil is extracted from the powder without using any chemicals. Importantly, CO2 extraction also eliminates any heavy metals and toxins which may have entered the food chain.

We are very careful not to use heat at any time, which can damage its desired therapeutic properties. The result is a high quality, concentrated, bioactive green-lipped mussel oil extract that is far more potent than fresh mussel or mussel powder. It takes 125 kg of mussel meat to produce 1 kg of our green-lipped mussel oil.
