WHAT IS COLLAGEN?

Collagen is an important natural protein that makes up our bodies' structural foundation.

The word "collagen" comes from the Greek word kolla, which means glue. This is an easy way to think of what collagen does - it is the main component of the connective tissues that hold our musculoskeletal system together. Without it, our bodies would literally fall apart.

Some forms of collagen are stronger than steel on a gram for gram basis.

Collagen makes up one-third of the protein in our bodies. It is found in bone, tendons, joints, cartilage, and skin. It is also present in muscle tissue, organs, blood vessels, hair, and nails.

There are at least 16 types of collagen. Type 1 collagen is the most abundant, comprising up to 90% of the total collagen in our bodies. It is a vital component in our skin, bone, organs, tendons, and ligaments. Type 3 collagen is closely associated to type 1 collagen. They are found together in muscles, organs, skin, and blood vessels.

Antler Farms® New Zealand Collagen is derived from grass fed bovine hides, yielding a natural blend of high grade type 1 and type 3 collagen.

Collagen contains 19 different essential and nonessential amino acids. Our product is rich in glycine, proline, alanine and hydroxiproline. These four primary amino acids account for nearly 65% percent of the amino acid profile.

What are the Benefits of Collagen?

Collagen has long been known as a beauty product due to its proven benefits for skin. However, beyond a more youthful appearance there are many other reasons to take collagen. Studies show that collagen can help:

  • strengthen bones
  • stabilize joints
  • improve skin tone
  • boost gut health

The natural aging process decreases collagen production in the body. Collagen deterioration is gradual, but progressive.

As we age, the cells that produce collagen, known as fibrils, slow down. In our mid 20's, collagen production falls marginally at about 1% per year. However, after age 30, collagen production begins to fall quickly. By age 45, collagen production has decreased by 25% from its peak, and by age 60 it has been cut in half. Active people can deplete their collagen stores even faster, which is why joint problems are a common occurrence in athletes.

Collagen is required by the body to maintain a healthy and well-functioning musculoskeletal system.

As our bodies' collagen supply is expended, our connective tissues become weaker. This has many negative effects. The most visually apparent effect is on our skin, which begins to form wrinkles. But more importantly, our joints become less stable. Our tendons and ligaments weaken and become more prone to injury. Our cartilage thins out and can result in joint pain and inflammation. Our bones lose strength and become more brittle.

Fortunately, collagen is resorbable.

When collagen is consumed, it can be converted and re-absorbed back into the body, reversing the ailments caused by collagen deterioration. Collagen stores can be replaced through high quality, highly bioavailable and highly absorbable collagen supplementation. Hydrolyzed collagen, in particular, is the best form of collagen used for replenishing in the body.

Bone and Joint Health

Studies show that collagen can increase bone mass density, improve joint stability and reduce joint inflammation.

From a biomechanical standpoint, collagen is very important for locomotion. Collagen fibers store, transmit and distribute energy created by the musculoskeletal system. It supports the efficient movement of our bodies, especially while walking and running.

Collagen is extremely beneficial for overall bone and joint health. 90% of organic bone mass is made up of collagen. Studies show that collagen can prevent and relieve osteoporosis because of its ability to stimulate bone-creating cells (Wu, 2004). It may also help increase bone mineral density (Nomura and Oohashi, 2005), repair and rebuild weakened tendons and ligaments (Shunck and Oesser, 2013), reduce inflammation (Dar, 2016) and alleviate joint pain (Clark, 2008).

Having an abundant collagen supply in the body benefits athletic performance by increasing endurance, reducing wear and tear caused by motion, and reducing the likelihood of injury.

Skin Improvement

Collagen can improve skin tone by boosting suppleness and elasticity.

75% of our skin's middle layer, called the dermis, is comprised of collagen. The dermis is arranged in a dense meshwork of bundles. Together with elastin, collagen gives skin its suppleness and elasticity.

When the collagen is depleted, the dermal layer loses its structural integrity. Without collagen to hold skin's outer layer in place, wrinkles begin to form. Skin becomes thin, saggy and uneven. Replenishing collagen keeps the skin firm by building up the dermal layer. It also increases skin elasticity and moisture.

Support Gut Integrity

Collagen has many properties that support proper digestion and improve gut integrity. It can be effective in treating Leaky Gut Syndrome and other digestive maladies.

Leaky Gut Syndrome is a common disorder in which the intestinal lining has excessive permeability. This allows bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, food particles and toxic waste to come into the body rather than being passed through and eliminated. Leaky Gut Syndrome is cause by inflammation of the gut lining. Allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune diseases and many other chronic diseases are all symptoms of a leaky gut.

Collagen contains the amino acid glutamine, which helps prevent inflammation of the guts, and amino acids proline and glycine, which are used to repair damaged intestinal walls. Research indicates that the biological process of producing new cells to rebuild, reinforce and seal the intestinal lining requires collagen synthesis. Collagen also boosts gastric juices which aid in digestion.

Therefore collagen supplementation may be beneficial to gut health in many ways- by improving digestion, reducing inflammation, healing the intestinal lining, and strengthening the infrastructure of the whole digestive system.

How is Antler Farms® New Zealand Collagen Processed?

Antler Farms® New Zealand Collagen comes from grass fed, pasture raised bovine hides.

Our collagen starts with naturally healthy, 100% grass fed cows raised in the beautiful Canterbury Plains of New Zealand. Our cows live outdoors and feed on green pasture year round. The herd is raised without the use of hormones, antibiotics, chemicals or GMOs.

Collagen is found naturally only in animals. It is present in animal bones, hides, tendons and ligaments. Bovine hides are particularly well suited as a source of collagen because the intermediate layer is rich in top grade collagen. In a hide-processing facility, collagen is carefully and hygienically extracted from hides that have been "split", meaning the subcutaneous connective tissue has been removed and separated.

We use a hi-tech enzymatic hydrolyzation process to break down long chain collagen protein into smaller chains, called collagen peptides (also known as hydrolyzed collagen or collagen hydrolysate). The hydrolyzation process isolates, purifies and concentrates collagen peptides before being spray dried and packaged for distribution.

Hydrolyzing collagen is necessary because undenatured, native collagen is a long chain protein with a high molecular weight. When unprocessed collagen is consumed in the form of animal tissue, our digestive system must break down the collagen into amino acids before it can be absorbed and used by the body. Collagen synthesis from these amino acids is often very low; it is not highly bioactive.

Antler Farms® 100% Pure New Zealand Collagen is 97% pure protein and has nearly a 100% absorption rate. It is perfectly soluble in hot or cold liquids, can be mixed into any drink, and is unflavored.

Antler Farms® New Zealand Collagen is 97% pure protein. It is molecularly optimized to be easily digested and highly bioavailable. Research shows that 90% of hydrolyzed collagen is absorbed in the body within six hours of consumption and nearly 100% of hydrolyzed collagen is ultimately utilized. This is almost four times more bioavailable than native collagen from animal protein.

Antler Farms® New Zealand Collagen contains no hormones, no antibiotics, no chemicals and no GMOs. We conduct thorough physical, chemical and bacteriological tests to ensure our high standards are consistently upheld.

HOW IS ANTLER FARMS® NEW ZEALAND COLLAGEN DIFFERENT?

At Antler Farms®, we believe in truth in labeling. Unfortunately, the dietary supplement industry is rife with misrepresentations and sometimes outright fraud. Companies will say anything to make a buck, even if it means deceiving their customers. As a result consumers often times cannot make decisions that are best for their health because they are given inaccurate or incomplete information.

We are aware that there are many competitors who source collagen from Brazil (if the label does not identify the source, most likely it is from Brazil). Despite their claims of being "grass fed", our findings reveal that their products are actually made from a blend of grass fed and grain fed cattle. Furthermore, antibiotics are regularly used on their herds. This raw material is plentiful and easily accessible to the manufacturers at very low cost, which is why you can find many low priced "grass fed" (but not really) collagen products on the market.

Our collagen comes from 100% grass cows. At Antler Farms® we will never cut corners to deliver an inferior product.

Our cows are grass fed and pasture raised without the use of hormones, antibiotics, chemicals and GMOs. There is no cleaner source.
