Though bone broth has seen a huge surge in popularity in recent years, it has been around since prehistoric times. Broth was a common part of the diet of early humans as a way to get nutrients from inedible or inaccessible parts of animals.

Bone broth is made by slowly simmering animal bones and connective tissue in water. This process draws the beneficial compounds out of the bones, marrow, tendons, and ligaments and puts them into the broth, making the abundance of nutrients easy to consume and absorb.

What are the Benefits of Bone Broth?

There are many health benefits for the entire body from consuming bone broth.

It is nutrient-dense, easy to digest, and rich in flavor. Bone broth contains many healing compounds such as collagen, proline, glycine, and glutamine. Also, there is an assortment of vitamins and minerals including: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, iron and zinc.

HEALTHY GUT

Bone broth supports proper digestive function and promotes gut health.

Collagen makes up one-third of the protein in our bodies. It is a very important component of our connective tissue, skin, and bones. Without collagen, we experience negative effects in our skin, joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones.

Bone broth contains an abundance of gelatin, the cooked form of collagen. Gelatin is rarely found in the modern diet, but should be, as it is a way to replenish collagen and its profile of amino acids.

In the body, the gelatin in bone broth can improve gut integrity and promote healthy digestion. It heals intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) and restores the normal mucosal layer in the gut. Gelatin also absorbs water and helps keep fluid in the digestive tract, which helps food move through your digestive system more easily and encourages regularly bowel movements.

Bone broth also contains the amino acids glutamine and glycine, which are essential for nourishing the gut lining and creating bile acid to digest fats in the small intestine.

BETTER SKIN

Bone broth can improve skin health by counteracting natural aging.

Gelatin also is great for your skin’s health.

As we age, the body makes less collagen. Because collagen provides a supportive structure to our skin’s middle layer, called the dermis, as collagen is lost our skin loses its structural integrity. This is apparent when the skin becomes visibly thin, saggy and wrinkled.

However, by consuming bone broth, you can counteract signs of your skin's natural aging. Studies show that dietary supplementation can replenish the collagen in the body, which helps maintain and restore the skin’s elasticity, suppleness and smoothness.

Polyphenols also protect our heart and cardiovascular system. These nutrients have been shown to help lower blood pressure, improve blood flow to the heart and brain, and prevent blood clots.

STRONGER JOINTS

Bone broth may protect the joints and help joint mobility.

Bone broth contains healthy nutrients extracted from animal cartridge and tendons, including chondroitin sulfates and glucosamine. These two proteins have been shown to support healthy tissue in joints and reduce joint pain. Studies show glucosamine and chondroitin may support joint comfort and help minimize age-related cartilage breakdown. These nutrients support healthy inflammation response as well as stronger bones, ligaments and joints.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STOCK, BROTH AND BONE BROTH?

The terms stock and broth are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference.

Stock is made from simmering bones with vegetables in water, with minimal to no seasoning. It is cooked very slowly. Stock congeals when cooled due to the gelatin content.

Broth is made by simmering meat, without bones, and vegetables in water. It contains seasoning and is cooked relatively quickly. Broth does not congeal when cooled because it does not contain gelatin.

Finally, bone broth is more like stock despite its name. It is made my simmering bones with vegetables in water, with minimal to no seasoning. But because it is cooked even longer than stock. It also congeals when cooled due to the gelatin content.

So which is the best?

Stock, broth and bone broth are all undeniably good for you. But we assert that bone broth is the best because it is able to extract the most nutritional value from the bones, tendons, marrow, and cartilage, and thus is provides the most benefits.
