WHAT IS COLOSTRUM?

Colostrum is known as "Mother Nature’s First Food" because it is the pre-milk fluid that all newborn mammals consume within the first few hours of birth.

Colostrum, is an important source of nutrients for a newborn mammal and its consumption is critical to the survival and health of the mammal. It plays a vital role in the development of the immune system by transferring antibodies and antimicrobials, and supporting immunoregulation – a process called passive immunity.

Colostrum is produced by females in late pregnancy and continues for only a short time after birth. The special factors in colostrum begin to diminish after 24 hours and transition into milk in approximately 36 hours. Each cow yields about nine gallons of colostrum total during this time frame.

As a dietary supplement, bovine colostrum is an excellent alternative to human colostrum because the immune factors and growth factors found in bovine colostrum are virtually identical to those in human colostrum. Colostrum is not species specific. This means that colostrum is biologically transferrable between bovines and humans.

The concentrated immune factors in bovine colostrum provide immunity defense against human pathogens, and the rich growth factors in bovine colostrum stimulate human cell growth and repair.

IMMUNE FACTORS

  • Immunoglobulins (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, IgM) are the primary immune factors in colostrum. There are five types. Each performs a specific role but all work together to fight disease and destroy pathogens. Also known as antibodies, immunoglobulins prevent viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies and the growth of yeast and fungus. The immune factors in bovine colostrum are four times greater than the amount found in human colostrum. The immunoglobulins content in Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is regularly tested and verified at 20-25%.
  • Proline Rich Peptides (PRP) are a chain of amino acids that modulate the immune system. They stimulate underactive immune systems and suppresses overactive immune systems as seen in autoimmune disease.
  • Lactoferrin is an iron binding protein that has antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It prevents the reproduction of bacteria in the gut.
  • Lactobacillus Bifidus and Acidophilus are probiotics that enable the digestion of food while curtailing harmful bacteria.
  • Lactoperoxidase is an antibacterial enzyme that interferes with their ability to replicate.
  • Cytokines and Lymphokines are proteins released by cells of the immune system to regulate immune responses.
  • Oligopolysaccharides and Glycoconjugate Sugars bind to pathogenic bacteria to stop them from penetrating the body.
  • Glycoproteins, Trypsin Inhibitors and Protease Inhibitors prevent the breakdown of colostrum in the digestive system. They enhance the bioavailability of colostrum's active components.
  • Lysozyme is an enzyme that destroys bacteria and viruses.
  • Leucocytes slow down viral reproduction.

GROWTH FACTORS

  • Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) and 2 (IGF-2) stimulate growth in most cells of the body, including skeletal muscle, cartilage, bone, nerves and skin.
  • Transforming Growth Factor Alpha and Beta stimulate gastrointestinal growth and repair.
  • Epidermal Growth Factor stimulates the generation, maintenance and healing of cells in the epidermal layers of the skin.
  • Fibroblast Growth Factor stimulates regeneration of various types of tissue, including skin and other organs.
  • Platelet-derived Growth Factor regulates cell growth and formation of blood vessels.

LACTOSE

  • Lactose is present in small amounts in colostrum. It is lowest at the start of production and increases as it transitions to milk. Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is collected within the first 24 hours and therefore has very low levels of lactose. In fact, nearly all people with lactose intolerance can take our colostrum without experiencing any side effects. Because colostrum heals the intestinal wall, it can reduce or eliminate many food allergies, including allergies to lactose.

What are the Benefits of Colostrum?

Many scientists believe that colostrum is the most powerful preventative food substance that we can consume.

Colostrum contains a high concentration of biologically active substances including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. However, of all the known components in colostrum, the most beneficial components are its immune factors and growth factors. Immune factors strengthen the body’s immune system to fight disease, while growth factors promote cell growth, development and repair. There have been over 5,000 studies done on the benefits of colostrum.

The three main benefits are:

Immune System Support

Colostrum is the only natural product to contain active immune factors.

Immune factors, also known as antibodies, make up our body’s immune system. Antibodies recognize, seek and bind to pathogens to prevent them from attacking cells. Therefore, immune factors protect us by neutralizing and eliminating pathogens.

70% of the cells that comprise our immune system are located in the gut. It is the main pathway for external matter to enter the body. This matter can be useful substances such as food and water, or damaging substances such as bacteria, viruses and toxins. Most pathogens that invade our bodies do so through the mucosal lining in our gut. So having a healthy gut is the strongest and most practical defense against disease. The regular use of colostrum keeps active antibodies in our gut which consistently combat pathogens that we ingest.

Colostrum also regulates the immune system. In instances where our immune system is overactive, colostrum brings the immune function back to normal levels.

Gastrointestinal Function Improvement

Colostrum can seal, reinforce and heal the gut lining in adults.

One of colostrum’s first functions is to seal the intestinal lining of a newborn. Newborns are born with “leaky” guts to allow for colostrum to penetrate the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream. Within a few days, once the beneficial immune factors and growth factors have been transferred from the mother to the newborn via colostrum, the gut is sealed. This prevents harmful materials from being absorbed into the body through the gut.

Leaky Gut Syndrome is a common disorder in which the intestinal lining has excessive permeability. This allows bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, food particles and toxic waste to come into the body rather than being passed through and eliminated. Leaky Gut Syndrome is caused by inflammation of the gut lining. Allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune diseases and many other chronic diseases are all symptoms of a leaky gut.

Colostrum improves gastrointestinal function by sealing and healing the gut. It stimulates cell growth to repair and strengthen the intestinal lining, which ultimately improves the integrity of the gut.

Athletic Performance

The key to colostrum’s positive impact on athletic performance lies in its rich growth factor matrix, led by IGF-1.

IGF-1 is a highly anabolic hormone that is produced by the liver in response to human growth hormone (HGH), which is produced in the pituitary gland. IGF-1 activates cell growth and repair. It also stops cell death. Therefore, IGF-1 stimulates growth in muscle, cartilage, bone, nerves and skin, and it speeds muscle recovery and regeneration.

Athletes can benefit from colostrum use to build lean muscle, improve strength and boost endurance. Colostrum also cuts recovery time and speeds the healing of muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries.

The regenerative effects of colostrum’s growth factors extend to nearly all the body's structural cells. This makes colostrum a powerful anti-aging food.

How is Antler Farms® Colostrum Processed?

Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is collected within 24 hours of calving, when the nutritional and therapeutic value of colostrum are at their highest. The needs of the newborn calf are always met first. This is essential to the health of the newborn and the preservation of the herd. The calf will be given 3 quarts of colostrum within the first 6 hours of birth and then 2 quarts within the next 12 hours. Because a cow produces much more colostrum than a calf can drink, we are not taking anything away from the calf. We cease collecting colostrum at 24 hours. After about 48 hours, the colostrum becomes transitional milk and finally full milk at about 72 hours.

Our colostrum is transported in a chilled container to a processing facility after collection. There, it is flash pasteurized for 15 seconds at 72 degrees Celsius and then spray-dried at a low temperature. Our colostrum is processed immediately; it is never frozen. Freezing and thawing can degrade some of colostrum’s active ingredients, as can high temperatures. At Antler Farms®, we are very careful during each step of processing to maintain all of colostrum’s biological components.

To verify that the bioactivity of Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is high, and we conduct quality tests on the final product. Additionally, Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is tested to be free of pesticides, heavy metals, antibiotics, and disease-causing pathogens. And since New Zealand law mandates that all dairy products must be free of hormones, antibiotics and chemical residues, you can be confident that our colostrum is clean, pure and powerful.

HOW IS NEW ZEALAND COLOSTRUM DIFFERENT?

Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is derived from grass fed cows.

Our cows are raised in the beautiful Canterbury Plains of New Zealand, where they roam outdoors on green pasture year round. Because pasture feeding is highly beneficial to the cow’s health, it follows that it greatly increases the quality of the colostrum they produce. Studies confirm that the nutrients in dairy products from grass fed cows are substantially greater than that of grain fed cows.

Additionally, because our cows are exposed to the outdoors without the use of antibiotics, they build a vigorous immune system. The foundation of this immune system is in its varied antibodies, which are then passed along through its colostrum. Ideally, colostrum should be sourced from a large herd (100+) of pasture raised cows and pooled together to increase the diversity of antibodies, thereby increasing its ability to resist disease. This is exactly how Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is made.
