What are the Benefits of Beet Root?
Beet root is a rich source of essential nutrients, nitrates, vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. It has been gaining popularity as not only a superfood but a functional food - around the world.
Beet Root is a powerful natural nitric oxide booster.
NITRIC OXIDE: Beet root has a high content of dietary nitrate. Nitrates are natural constituents of plants and are the main source of nitrogen needed for growth. Nitrates are made up of nitrogen and oxygen, NO3 (one nitrogen and three oxygen molecules). When consumed, nitrates interact with saliva and bacteria in the mouth and are converted into nitrites, NO2 (one nitrogen and two oxygen molecules). Salivary nitrite is metabolized in the stomach by a variety of enzymes to nitric oxide.
Nitric Oxide, also known as N.O., travels through the arteries. As a signaling molecule, it instructs arteries to relax. Therefore, nitric oxide acts as a vasodilator. It opens blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and allows more oxygen to be delivered to muscles. The increased blood flow through the body improves energy levels, cardiovascular health and athletic endurance.
Beet root can reduce the amount of oxygen required by muscles to perform activities, increasing oxygen usage efficiency and aerobic capacity. In one study with cyclists, researchers found that their time trials improved by almost 3% after consuming beet root juice. The cyclists exhibited a 7-11% improvement in power output with no increase in oxygen cost of exercise. Another study with runners found that velocity increased by 3%. The participants' heart rates did not change even though their speed increased, again demonstrating increased oxygen efficiency. A study with divers found that they held their breath for up to 11% longer after consuming beet root juice. The effects of nitrate on blood flow may also improve brain function by facilitating the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the brain.
Beet Root protects the body by acting as a potent natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxifier.
BETALAINS: Antler Farms® Organic Beet Root comes from the root of the red beet. Red beet root has been ranked as one of the 10 most potent antioxidant vegetables. Their power comes from the vibrant red/violet color, which is derived from pigments called betalains. Beetroot is one of the few vegetables on earth that contain these highly bioactive phytochemicals.
Betalains have been shown to protect cells from oxidative injury. They neutralize toxins and support a cell’s natural detoxification process, protecting cellular components and strengthening antioxidant defenses. By supporting the body’s ability to detox on a cellular level, betalains also prevent inflammation. Moreso, beet root contains nitrate and several highly bioactive phenolics which are also known to be excellent antioxidants.
VITAMINS & MINERALS: Beet root is also full of essential vitamins and minerals such as folate, manganese, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B-complex, copper, and potassium. It is also a good source of dietary fiber.
How is Antler Farms® New Zealand Beet Root Grown and Harvested?
Antler Farms® New Zealand Beet Root is grown outdoors, without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or artificial fertilizers.
We have a proven system for producing the highest quality organic beet root through careful management of weeds and pests through a variety of processes. These processes include crop rotation, management of soil nutrients, non-chemical weeding and approved pest control practices. Every batch of beet root is tested for ensure there is no E. coli, salmonella, yeast, mold and other harmful bacteria. Additional, we do random tests for heavy metals.
Our beet root is grown in the rich, fertile soil of New Zealand’s Canterbury Plains. Our soil is routinely tested each year before use to ensure it meets certified organic standards. On our sustainably managed and family owned farms, our beet root is grown in natural sunlight over the course of 50-70 days.
Our beet root is harvested precisely when its nutrients are at their peak concentration to provide the highest quality product with maximum nutritional content.
Once harvested, our beet root is washed and freeze dried. Cold processing is important as high temperatures decrease the bioavailability of dietary nitrate in beets. Freeze dried beet root delivers more nutrients, including dietary nitrate, than beets subjected to heat. After freeze drying is completed, our beet roots is milled into a powder, and packed for shipping.

HOW DO NITRATES IN BEETS DIFFER FROM NITRATES IN MEATS?When we hear about nitrates, it is usually in a negative light. It is commonly believed that nitrates are unhealthy and should be avoided. However, that is an incomplete understanding. Nitrates are found naturally in fruits, vegetables and grains. They are an essential plant nutrient found in soil that is taken in by all plants and used as a primary nitrogen source. In it of themselves, nitrates are not bad for you. However, when nitrates are exposed to high heat, in the presence of amino acids, they can turn into chemical compounds called nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are toxic. Most are strong carcinogens, which increase the risk of serious diseases like cancer significantly. So nitrates, when added to cured meats such as salami, bacon and hot dogs as a color preservative, becomes a serious health risk. Even though plants also contain nitrates/nitrites, they are rarely exposed to such high heat and thus, do not form nitrosamines. Therefore the positive health benefits due to the natural nitrates in vegetables such as beets are completely different than the harmful effects of the added nitrates in meats. |
